Located in Preston County, Kingwood is a West Virginia City with a population of almost 3,000 people. Kingwood serves as the county seat of Preston County. The city is located about 22 miles south of Morgantown, West Virginia and 170 miles north of Charleston, West Virginia.
The City of Kingwood was settled in 1807 by Conrad Sheets, Jacob Funk and a gentleman whose last name was Steel. It is said that the three men built houses and called the new town Kingwood after a grove of large trees nearby. In 1811, the West Virginia General Assembly established Kingwood as a town of Monongalia, the first in Preston Territory.
Kingwood is home to several exciting local attractions. The Craig Civic Center is part of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and hosts various activities during different weeks of the year. Kingwood is also home to two beautiful parks, Brown Park and City Park. Individuals visiting these parks have the options to rent pavilions for picnics and parties, play on the playground equipment, utilize multiple sports courts and more.
