Morgantown is a city located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. In 2015, the U.S. Bureau estimated Morgantown had a population of about 31,000 people, making it the largest city in the north-central portion of West Virginia.
The history of Morgantown dates back to the late 1700s. Before the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the area in which Morgantown sits was widely contested between settlers and native Indians. Zackquill Morgan settled Morgantown in 1772 and in 1785 Zackquill received the charter for the establishment of his settlement which he named Morgan’s Town. Today, Morgantown stands as a result of Zackquill Morgan’s efforts.
There are several things to see and do in Morgantown, West Virginia. History enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the many early structures standing in Morgantown such as the Old Stone House, built prior to 1813. Another notable structure is a home built by John Rogers. Located on Foundry Street, this home was built in 1840 and is being occupied by the Dering Funeral Home.
